Mississippi Robotics, in partnership with, the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation, hosted a SUMO Wrestling Robotics Camp and Competition with awards ceremony at the Jackson Medical Mall. The competition was the finale to the week-long summer camp for students in grades 5 – 9 with interests in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) areas.  Students came from around the Jackson MS area. 18 students total participated in the camp.  Students were taught the basics of building robots and how to connected and control them by their cell phones through blue tooth wireless technology.  Students were introduced to science and engineering college and career topics through video and guest speakers.

The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation is a non-profit organization and management arm of the Jackson Medical Mall, based in Jackson, MS, that promotes health care and economic development, benefiting an underserved population in a designated revitalization district.

The camp students built a SUMO wrestling robot from a LEGO NXT robot kit. Each student  had time to enhance their robot for strength and agility. Each robot was controlled from a cell phone using wireless bluetooth technology and downloadable apps.  On the last day, Friday the 12th from 1-3pm, a SUMO Wrestling competition was held at the Mall Center-stage with the students being judged in 7 categories; straight sprint speed, obstacle speed, math, science, most creative, SUMO tournament, and Overall.  Every student earned one or more ribbons.
